On December 31, 2025, President Donald Trump issued a proclamation announcing that he was delaying an increase in the duty rates for imports of upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities. Referencing “productive negotiations of agreements with multiple countries to address the threatened impairment of the national security with respect to imports of wood products,” President Trump has delayed for one year – until January 1, 2027 – an increase to 50% of these Section 232 tariffs. The tariff rates will remain at 25%.
The Trump administration launched a Section 232 investigation into the national security threat posed by imports of timber, lumber, and their derivative products in March 2025, which included wood-based cabinetry and furniture (see Update of March 3, 2025). On September 29, 2025, President Trump issued a proclamation setting a 25% tariff on certain upholstered wooden products, kitchen cabinets and vanities, with a planned increase to 50% on January 1, 2026.
